Elementary Library

book

Hello from the Library! I wanted to take the time to introduce myself to you and let you know about library policies and procedures. My name is Veronica Ard, and in addition to teaching K-2 music here at HES, I work in the library as well. I am blessed that I get to teach your children. I hope that the information provided will give you a better understanding of the policies and procedures of the elementary library. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at veronica.ard@hollidayisd.net .  I am very excited about this year and the opportunity I have to help your child discover all the library has to offer.

Library Attendance

Students attend Library once a week with their homeroom or reading class. Students can also visit the library during scheduled open times. The library will be open from 7:30-8:00 each morning.

Check Out Policy

Students enrolled in grades 1-5 may check out 2-3 books. Students in the younger grades are directed by their teachers regarding the number of books they may check out. No more than three books can be checked out by any student at any time. Your student’s AR reading level is determined by a pretest, and he or she reads in that leveled range until advancing to a new level. This leveled range is what guides your child’s book selection while he or she is reading to meet the AR goal determined by the teacher. Once the students meet their AR goals, they are allowed to choose books that are either non-AR or above their reading level. Note: Kindergarten does not participate in AR and will only check out 1 book each week.

Late Books and Fines

Students have two weeks to read their checked-out books. If they have not finished their book in that time, they are allowed to renew their book for another two weeks as long as the book has not been reserved by another student or teacher. Books that are not returned to the library for check-in or renewal on the due date are considered late. Students who are in grades K-2 will be sent a notification of their late book to help remind them to return it to the library. In grades 3-5, fines will be assessed on books that are past due, and a notification will be sent home. Assessed fines will be waived in the event of an absence that kept the student from attending their library time. Students who return their late books in a timely manner past the due date may have their fines waived at the discretion of the librarian. If a student has an overdue book, he or she will only check out one new book until the overdue book is returned or until the fine is paid. Library privileges may be lost if a student has an overdue book that have not been returned to the library. If a book has not been turned back by 6 weeks from checkout date, the student will no longer be able to checkout any more books until the book is found or paid for. The stated policy is in effect to ensure students are practicing responsibility in accordance with their library privileges.

Lost and Damaged Books

Students who check out books are entrusted with the care of those books. If books are lost or if they are damaged beyond repair or use, students will be responsible for the purchase price of the book. A notification will be sent home with the student to indicate the replacement price of the book. Payment may be remitted by cash or check; checks should be made out to Holliday I.S.D. If the book is found and returned damage-free to the library within two weeks of payment being made, a refund will be made in exchange for the book. By keeping our library books in good condition, we benefit the entire school community. Please help your children remember to care for their books in a proper manner.

How to Search for a Book

You can search for books at home by visiting the library resources tab on the school website. While there, students may log in using the same information they use to access their AR account (same username and password). Students can build a list of books that they would like to read and save it. They can also print out their resource list to bring to school with them.  To help your student look for the title of books that have AR tests available for them, he or she may visit www.arbookfind.com . By cross referencing the card catalog, your student can be sure that the book is an AR book and that it is available in the library.
