This is my 36th year to teach! I have taught 1st, 3rd grade, and 5th grade, small group reading classes, ESL, high school GED readiness, and now am entering my 17th year at holliday High School teaching Spanish 2 and 3. I love what I do!
I began my teaching carreer in 1984. Before moving to Holliday in 1997, I taught 3rd grade at Bedford Heights Elementary School in Bedford, Texas for 4 years, 3rd grade for 4 years at Central Elementary School in Stephenville, Texas, In-School GED at Pleasanton High School in Pleasanton, Texas for 1 year, then 2 years of 1st grade in Charlotte, Texas.
I just completed the 25th year as a teacher at Holliday ISD. I began here by teaching 5th grade before moving to Reading Improvement and ESL classes. I taught 1st grade at Holliday Elementary School for several years. In 2005, I joined the HHS staff as the Spanish 2 and 3 teacher. I absolutely love teaching Spanish and am passionate about it.
My family is very important to me. I married Darryl Sewell in 1984 and we have 2 children: Ashley Stirling who is married to Mark Stirling and lives in Auckland, New Zealand, and Gunnar Sewell who lives in Tulsa, OK with his wife Sabra Sewell and their 3 young daughters Elora, Leighton, and Josie. Ashley graduated from Holliday High School where she was involved in the band and served as section leader of the pit and Band Chaplain. Gunnar was involved mostly in sports, playing football, basketball, and running track. Even though we are separated by distance, we are a close-knit family and thoroughly enjoy the time we spend together both in person and on FaceTime!
I was born in Ft. Worth, Texas and lived the first 10 years of my life in the USA. At the age of 10, my parents became missionaries and the excitement began. First we moved to San Jose, Costa Rica for 1 year while my parents attended language school to learn Spanish. Then we moved to Veracruz, Mexico, where we stayed until my junior year in high school. We lived in Mexico City that year, then moved to Balboa, Panama for my senior year. Those years in Central America were the most formative years for me. I became bilingual and learned to appreciate different cultures and people groups. Teaching Spanish is more than a job to me, it is a passion. I want to show my students that the world is a big wonderful place full of people who may speak and live differently, but who share the same hopes and dreams as we do.
After returning to the USA for college, I met the cutest, kindest man in the world: my husband, Darryl. He serves as pastor of First Baptist Church in Holliday and can be seen often in the stands of football, volleyball, basketball and track supporting his Holliday Eagles.
In my free time, I enjoy cooking, voluteering at First Baptist Church Holliday, reading, music, and traveling to Tulsa to play with my sweet granddaughters. I also love to “bush walk” among the beautiful forests of New Zealand with my son-in-law Mark.
